The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) was initiated under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Peter Eigen, founder of Transparency International and co-founder of the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform.
Based on a public pledge made by His Excellency Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in the “Nouakchott Declaration on Transparency and Sustainable Development in Africa” (20.01.2015), the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform was tasked by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania with the development of a global, coherent conceptual framework for the Fisheries Transparency Initiative in May 2015. For this, the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform, acting as the International Secretariat for the FiTI, is supported by an International Advisory Group. This group gathers international fisheries and governance experts from government, companies and civil society.
The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform is a non-profit, limited liability company. The organization in based in Berlin/Germany. The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform aims to:
- advance democratic processes and smart governance strategies in Germany, Europe and the world, and

Through this deliberative exchange of ideas, the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform creates a mutual understanding and supports sustainable democratic politics, ultimately strengthening the level of transparency, democratic participation and accountability of citizens.
